Absolute Value And Argument

(This topic is in Mathematics S&T Paper 1, Chapter 1)

Absolute value and argument of a given complex number can be calculated by using our scientific calculator.  I will show you how to obtain the absolute value and argument for a complex number  2 + 2i using a Casio fx-570ES calculator.

First of all, we need to learn how to input that complex number 2 + 2i . The steps are as follows :

1.  Press 2.

2.  Press +.

3.  Press 2.

4.  Press SHIFT.

5.  Press ENG.

Hmm, the complex number  2 + 2i  should be seen now.

To find the absolute value of  2 + 2i  :

1.  Press MODE.

2.  Select 2.  (Now your calculator is in the complex mode)

3.  Press SHIFT.

4.  Press hyp.

5.  Now,  put in your complex number 2 + 2i .

6.  Press =

Hmm! That is the absolute value for 2 + 2i .

To find your argument :

1.  Set your calculator into complex mode (Step 1 and 2)

2.  Press SHIFT.

3.  Press 2.

4.  Select 1.

5.  Put in your complex number 2 + 2i .

6.  Press = .

That is the argument for  2 + 2i . If your calculator is in the degree mode, that answer is in degree.  You need to set your calculator into radian mode if you wish your answer to be in radian.
