Part 2: Easier Method To Find Squares Near 100

In my previous post, we have learnt the trick how to mentally find the square of numbers near 100, given those numbers are greater than 100.  Now we are going to learn how to find the square of numbers near 100, but those numbers are less than 100.

Suppose that we want to solve 94².  Here are the steps :

  1. 94 is 6 less than 100 (100 – 94 = 6).  So, our first step is to subtract this 6 from 94 which gives you 88.  This is the first two digits of our answer.
  2. Then square that 6 which gives you 36.  This is the last two digits of our answer.
  3. And for our last step, just attach this 36 to 88.  Therefore 94² = 8836.

Let us see some more examples.  What is 96² ?

96 – 4 = 92   (Step 1)

4² = 16   (Step 2)

Therefore, 96² = 9216   (Step 3)

Now, how about 88² ?

88 – 12 = 76   (Step 1)

12² = 144   (Step 2)  Three digits answer for square.  Need to carry the digit 1.  Please refer to my previous post to understand this better.

Therefore, 88² = 7744   (Step 3)

Practise this new trick in order to master it🙂
